rriza studio takes its name from both the Spanish verb aterrizar — “to land” and the word risa meaning laugh or smile.
While the act of aterrizaje often refers to a plane touching down, I enjoy its other, more poetic aspect too - the act of grounding, arriving, and connecting to land. And risa of course is on the nose, I love the sincerity of a laugh and as a photographer, I have a tendency for capturing wholesome candid and appreciate the organic process of capturing an image.
This studio works with glass and ceramic, spanning both public art initiatives and sculptural pieces for the home.
rriza studio is the creative practice of artist and organizer Joana Chai-Chang Azterbaum.
